Road authorities to get equipment, fuel for road maintanance
“So we realized that the road authorities at times they do not have enough funds to buy fuel, to even buy equipment. They are spending a lot of time or money resources to hiring of equipment. So through the guidance of the government, our honorable minister Felix Mhona, we made a deliberate strategy that we capacitate these road authorities.
Zimbabwe National Roads Adminstration, ZINARA, has resolved to capacitate road authorities with resources needed in road maintanance to cut out the burdensome expense of hiring equipment, The NewsHawks has learnt.
The decision was revealed during ZINARA’s AGM in Harare yesterday where the Board Chair,Dr. George Manyaya said this is the only way to speed up road maintenance programmes across the country.
Manyaya, added that, under the direction of the government and Transport Minister Felix Mhona, a new strategy has been implemented to address these gaps.
Zimbabwe’s road authorities have long grappled with inadequate funding in road rehabilitation programmes, hindering their ability to purchase fuel and essential equipment for maintenance.
“And what the government is also saying is that we capacitate, we really ask them to come up with a list of road equipment units that they want. And that’s the process now that we are engaging with various stakeholders, how the best way to procure this so that they can benefit and they don’t spend much time hiring equipment,” said Manyaya.
Zinara has procured 2 million liters of diesel in hard currency for distribution to road authorities, aiming to reduce their dependence on hiring equipment and to improve operational efficiency.
“So we procured 2 million liters of diesel in hard currency which we are distributing to the road authorities and if they aquit we give them again,”said Manyaya.
