Sally Mugabe Hospital fire doused by Harare fire fighters
“We managed to stop the fire from extending to the hospital wards. We managed to control that, but we’re still putting out fire, but now it’s under control,” said Bvumavaranda.
A section of Sally Mugabe Hospital was gutted by fire on Sunday.
According to Acting Assistant Chief Fire Officer Moses Bvumavaranda, the Harare Central Fire Station received a distress call at 11:53 am and dispatched two fire engines, arriving at the scene in under seven minutes.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a storeroom already engulfed in flames.
“We managed to stop the fire from extending to the hospital wards. We managed to control that, but we’re still putting out fire, but now it’s under control,” said Bvumavaranda.
The affected storeroom contained unused hospital beds and other items, while solar panels installed on the roof were also damaged.
The incident underscores the importance of rapid emergency response and the need for adequate fire prevention measures in critical health facilities.
No injuries were reported, but the hospital lost valuable equipment and supplies in the blaze.
Although the fire fighters have a record of arriving late and not being very helpful when they arrive, Sally Mugabe Hospital’s case was different.
The fire comes a fortnight after President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s improptu visit to the hospital for a field visit after an outcry on social media on the state of service in public hospitals.
The debate was sparked by a post by Minister of Youth who pleaded with the President to help improve the situation.
