United States president Donald Trump is reportedly angling for a military strike on Iran, as Washington weighs how to respond to Tehran’s fierce crackdown on mass anti-government protests under a near-total internet shutdown.
Iran is gripped by massive nationwide anti-government protests, described as the largest uprising since the 1922-2023 Mahsa Amini movement and potentially the most significant since the 1979 Revolution.
This comes as Iran’s security establishment moved to tighten its grip on the unrest.
Iranian authorities warned that protesters could face the death penalty, while the military accused foreign “enemies” of fuelling the unrest.
More than 100 people have died in the protests, reports say.
