The City of Harare has recorded one positive case of cholera in the high density surburb of GlenView.
“The City of Harare would like to notify residents of a positive cholera case in Glen View and we urge residents to be extremely cautious to avert an outbreak,” read their Facebook post.
The victim is a 25 year old vendor at Tichagarika shops who has not travelled outside the city in 60days.
This means the disease could have been locally contracted.
“There was no history of travel outside the city during the last two months. Patient stays with his uncle and family. Patient is a vendor at Tichagarika Shopping Centre where he spends most of his time,”
Due to the scarcity of water that has rocked the city, the victim who stays with two other family members gets water for use around the house from a shallow well.
“Water from a shallow well at number 9246 Glen View is used without further treatment at point of use. They also sometimes use borehole water from 2nd Circle near Glenview 3 High School,” they added.
The cholera patient is extremely dehydrated and has been admitted at Beatrice Infectious Hospital.
“A 25 year old male is now admitted at Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospital and his signs and symptoms included nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, general body malaise and severe dehydration,”
“The patient is in stable condition and responding well to treatment,” read the post.
Harare has urged residents to exercise caution and improve hygiene practices to avoid the spread of this contagious disease.
