Police suspect that the armed robbery could be an “inside job” as they intensify a manhunt for armed robbers who stormed the bank at National Railways of Zimbabwe Building in Bulawayo (corner Fife Street and 9th Avenue.

The money was being delivered to the bank in a cash-in-transit Safeguard Security van. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the armed robbery incident, saying law enforcement agents are now investigating the issue which has left city residents stunned.

Eyewitnesses, including those who recorded short videos, say the robbers took a short while to storm the bank and delivery van before they loaded the money in a white Ford Ranger unchallenged and sped off.

Cash-in-transit heists are not common in Zimbabwe, but rife in neighbouring South Africa.

Ecobank released a statement saying they were taking measures to beef up security to avoid such incidents from happening in future.

Meanwhile, Fawcett security company says they were not aware that they were transporting USD$ 4 million.
