HARARE – The family of jailed former foreign affairs minister Walter Mzembi says he is in good spirits and receiving adequate medical care while in custody, dismissing claims that his health has deteriorated.

In a statement posted on social media on Tuesday, Mzembi’s relative Laurence Muzembi said the former Cabinet minister was “much healthier” than when he was first incarcerated and had adjusted to life in prison.

“While prison is never easy, Walter is in good spirits and is actually much healthier than when he first entered,” Muzembi wrote.

He said Mzembi was receiving the medical treatment and support he needs and had found peace through personal reflection and forming new friendships.

The family said they visit him daily and expressed gratitude for the support they have received.

They also urged restraint from public commentary on the case, saying they would not engage in discussions that could compromise ongoing legal proceedings.

“While some choose to write negatively or try to involve the whole family in the situation, we believe it is best not to comment on the ongoing case to ensure the legal process remains fair,” the statement said.

Mzembi’s family added that they have confidence in the judicial system and praised authorities for the professional manner in which he has been treated so far.

Mzembi is facing charges linked to his time in government, which he has previously denied.
