Crane collapses, kills one at Mbudzi interchange construction
“The mechanical failure resulted in the collapse of both the static tower crane and the mobile crane being used for the de-erection process,” reads the statement.
An employee working at the construction site of Trabablas Interchange, formerly Mbudzi Round About, has died after a crane accident, Tefoma has confirmed.
In a statement released this evening, Tefoma, a construction joint venture contracted by government to build the interchange, says there was a mechanical fault during de erection of the crane, that led to the fatal accident.
“Tefoma Construction (Pvt) Ltd (Tefoma) regrets to report a fatal injury following a mechanical failure during crane de-erection operations at the Trabablas Interchange project site on 6 January 2025,” read the statement.
“The incident occurred during the dismantling of a static tower crane by Manzlink (Pvt) Ltd (Manzlink), our contracted rigging specialist firm.
“The mechanical failure resulted in the collapse of both the static tower crane and the mobile crane being used for the de-erection process,” reads the statement.
Though the joint venture of Tensor Systems, Fossil Contracting and Masimba Holdings, is the main contractor, the deceased was employed by a subcontractor, Manzlink, a rigging company.
“The deceased was an employee of Manzlink, the specialist subcontracted company at the site,”
Tefoma has assured the public that circumstances around the accident are being investigated.
“In cooperation with relevant authorities, a full investigation into the incident is currently underway,” they said.
