Cement Superpower Status
South Africa cemented its position as the world’s rugby superpower after crushing Argentina 48-7 to clinch the 2024 Castle Lager Rugby Championship for the first time since 2019 at Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.
This comes a week after the Springboks narrowly lost 29-28 to the same team.
The victory ensured Springboks, the reigning world champions, won the tournament with five victories, one defeat in six games.
Three weeks ago, the Springboks beat New Zealand’s All Blacks 18-12 to win the Freedom Cup on their way to their ultimate victory last night.
The Rugby Championship, formerly known as the Tri Nations Series (1996–2011), is an international rugby union competition contested annually by Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
These are traditionally the four highest ranked national teams in the Southern Hemisphere; the Six Nations, (comprising England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales), is a similar tournament in the Northern Hemisphere.
