Madam Boss continues to soar, scores a Zimbabwe first at BET Awards
No other artist from this country had been to the BET Awards before! And, of all the people, who makes history – a simple girl from Harare born as Tyra Chikocho and famously known to us all now as Madame Boss. But you have to give her the credit.
FOR all her faults and perfect imperfections, Madam Boss has been there, done that! Her recent flirtation with the prestigious BET Awards is a first not just for the comedienne, but for Zimbabwe. And they call it Culture’s Biggest Night for a reason.
No other artist from this country had been to the BET Awards before! And, of all the people, who makes history – a simple girl from Harare born as Tyra Chikocho and famously known to us all now as Madame Boss. But you have to give her the credit.
She has been continuously putting in the work into her craft, so much so that big brands have started recognising her.
Having even tried a hand at gospel music, it seems she has found her calling in comedy.
But her story is all the more remarkable when you learn that she was once a domestic worker.
That did not in any way make her feel less important or incapable of pursuing her goals as a comedienne.
Those who have followed her since her formative years will realise that whatever hurdles she went through, it did not put her down but raised her hopes even higher.
She learnt how to develop a thick skin when necessary and also to keep her feet on solid ground when need be.
Frankly speaking, it is not easy to rise above the rest, especially if you are a mother and a wife, without stones being thrown at you.
How she managed to convince her in-laws that she was cut for comedy was nothing short of genius.
In some Zimbabwean traditions and customs, a woman who takes to the stage to showcase herself is seen as not only non-achiever, but of loose morals. But that is not what Madam Boss is all about.
In fact, she is the epitome of resilience and decency.
Of course, she is eking out a living from comedy and also making her family so proud.
Whoever thought that comedy would take Madam Boss this far, strutting her stuff in New York, rubbing shoulders with the who’s who of Hollywood? From Will Smith, Ray J, to TI – you name them – everyone who attended the 2024 BET Awards, Madam Boss was sure to get a snap with them.
As a nation, at times we look for hope from wrong things, and yet it’s the people like Madam Boss who keep pushing boundaries with the smallest of things.
Perhaps, as a nation we need not to hate but love those who make brand Zimbabwe worthy noting.
