Elvis Chipezeze, the South African-based Zimbabwean goalkeeper, capped his string of stunning performances with yet another man-of-the-match display in Carling Knockout Cup final in Bloemfontein yesterday as his team Magesi beat mighty Sundowns 2-1.
The giant-slayers, Magesi, a second-tier Motsepe Foundation Championship side, produced one of the biggest shocks in South African football history at Toyota Stadium bringing down favourites, Sundowns, who not only South African champions, but also a continental heavyweight.
But it was Chipepeze (34) who stole the show again with a man-of-the-match performance, in a series of similar showings.
He has been making waves with his impressive performances in the tournament, leading by example as captain.
His fourth man-to-match performance earned him another R100 000, banking R400 000 in the process.
Before that, Chipepeze starred when his team beat another giant, Orlando Pirates 3-2 at Orlando Stadium on 19 October.
Magesi’s journey to the final was nothing short of impressive, with wins against Orlando Pirates, TS Galaxy, and Richards Bay.
The Limpopo side’s victory over Sundowns is a testament to their determination, courage and winning mentality.
For Chipepeze, a former Chicken Inn, Baroka and Zimbabwe national team keeper whose career appeared to have tanked after Baroka’s relegation in 2022, the journey has been a fairy tale.
The wonder tale marks an impressive football resurrection for the goalkeeper who promised to fak’ugesi (power) the tournament at the beginning, as he said in an interview after the final.
And he did – powered his side to victory with impressive saves which contributed to the win.
