Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Liberal Party amid plunging popularity ratings and threats of tariffs from incoming United States President Donald Trump.
Trudeau has been the leader of the Liberal Party for 11 years and prime minister for nine.
The 53-year-old told reporters at a press conference in the capital Ottawa today:
“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its new leader.”
Trudeau will remain prime minister in a caretaker capacity until a new leader is chosen.
