National flag carrier Air Zimbabwe is set to introduce flights between Harare and Mutare – which were there during the Rhodesian era – ahead of the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Travel Expo in the Eastern Highlands city next month.

In a statement, the national airline said:

“Air Zimbabwe is proud to announce the introduction of daily return flights between Harare and Mutare from 8 to 14 September 2025, ahead of the highly anticipated Sanganai/Hlanganani World Travel Expo taking place from 10 to 12 September 2025 in Mutare. This timely addition to the flight schedule forms part of Air Zimbabwe’s strategic turnaround initiatives, which include expanding the national carrier’s route network and improving domestic connectivity.

“The move reflects our unwavering commitment to making travel within Zimbabwe easier, more convenient, and more accessible, thereby supporting the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry’s efforts to grow the tourism sector. Hosting this year’s Sanganai/Hlanganani in Manicaland Province presents a unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on the Eastern Highlands — one of Zimbabwe’s most picturesque and diverse tourism destinations.

“By offering these flights, Air Zimbabwe reaffirms its role as a key enabler of tourism growth and a committed partner in showcasing Zimbabwe’s attractions to the world.

Flight schedule highlights:

Daily Return Flights: Convenient daily flights will operate between Harare and Mutare, giving exhibitors, delegates, and visitors an efficient way to travel to the Expo and explore the region.

Seamless Connections: Passengers will be able to connect between Victoria Falls–Harare–Mutare, enabling a multi-destination travel experience within Zimbabwe.

Regional and International Links: Travellers from Mutare will have smooth onward connections to regional and international destinations via Harare, expanding access for business and leisure.”

Air Zimbabwe chief executive Edmund Makona explained.

“This operation is a pilot project. We are testing the market, understanding demand, and exploring the long-term viability of this route. If the demand is there, Air Zimbabwe will be ready to make it a permanent feature of our network.”

The national airline says it worked closely with Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ), National Handling Services (NHS) and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) to put infrastructure and support services for a smooth operation.

“Air Zimbabwe is more than an airline, we are a bridge that connects people, cultures, and opportunities. These Harare–Mutare flights are proof of our dedication to growth, our belief in Zimbabwe’s tourism potential, and our determination to keep the nation flying high,” Makona said.

For added convenience, Air Zimbabwe has partnered with PayNow to enable online payments for pre-booked tickets, making it easier for customers to secure their travel from anywhere, the airline said.
